But I feel almost that that long-term caring for a character can be equaled by more short-term caring. I liked ALcazar for a while, so I liked Sage when she came on just because she was related to him. Johnny Zacchara was a hit for me because I instantly fell in love with teh image of him adn what he coudl be. Same with Spinelli. I care about Spinelli now as a "new" teen or whatever, as much as I care about Jake as Liason's golden child.

Does any of that make sense? It's just that it's very possible to care about a new character that just came to town that is either awesome on its own or connected to someone awesome, as much as you care about a character whose birth you saw. I dont' necessarily think the two are mutually exclusive.

Damn it, now I barely know what I just said. I'm going to bed and I'm going to hope i make sense in the morning.

I absolutely know what you mean about Georgie. Sometimes when I watch Maxie, I swear she has Felicia-like mannerisms. I don't know if KS has watched KW's stuff from the 80s or what exactly. Maybe it is just an incredible job on the part of the casting directors or something.

I guess my point isn't that you have to have the next gen teen scene be drawn from actual known lineage. But what GH sometimes does really poorly is integrate new characters into the canvas (sorry!). Sometimes they are a hit like Spinelli or Diane. Other times, the writers try too hard to tie them in to established families (with unrealistic discoveries of long lost relatives or children people never knew they had?!) or they give them either no back story or they keep changing it all the time like Coop or Jesse, etc.

No matter where a character comes from - an on-screen NOP, an on-going relationship, a marriage, boarding school, long lost relative, etc. - the character development still has to be there. But I do think I'm more naturally accepting of a character who has on-screen ties because the potential is there for a role that might be of interest outside of what relation they play to Sonny. Otherwise I look up for 5 seconds from folding laundry, go "hmmm... that will be Frons' next IT girl to suck all of our screen time and get inserted into a mob story and be the next love interest for so-and-so" and then I go back to business.
