Chapter one
"There will never be a good time for us Jason," Elizabeth said with a calmness in her voice. It was a statement of fact one that ate at her very soul.
"I know that, but I can't change this Elizabeth. I made choices a long time ago that led to this, I'm sorry that it's hurting you. I never wanted that, but I can't change it," he told her looking anywhere but in her eyes.
"Even though there will never be a right time for us doesn't mean I've given up," she told him her voice rising a little.
"What... ah what do you mean?" he asked in confusion.
"Jason this is what I mean," she said pointing around her studio. "I'll take what little time I can get with you. I just want to hang out with you."
He smiled at her, "You just want me to paint the high up places so you won't have to."
"Well there's that too," she said with a giggle. "What do you say? This is all I'm asking for, when you need a break and need time to be away from it all, you can come here. You know hang out with me?"
"Hang out huh? What if I want to do this," he said leaning forward.
Elizabeth saw his intent look and knew he was about to kiss her and pulled back. "Well I would have to say that today you have too much work to do."
He had to laugh at her this time. His heart lifted and he felt light headed for a moment. How had he ever deserved to have a person like Elizabeth in his life? "Tease," he whispered to her.
She laughed and handed him a paint brush, "Get to work Morgan,"
"Yes master and where would you like me to start?" he asked taking the brush from her outstretched hand. He let his fingers linger over hers in a soft caress.
"Over by the window please, I already have that taped up and ready to go. Hey what do you think of the color I chose?" she asked him.
"It's yellow, right?" he asked. "Reminds me of the sun."
"Good that is what I was looking for," she said. "Thanks, Jason I promise you won't regret this."
He hoped he was making the right decision here, he hoped that this wouldn't end up with her in pain again. He hated seeing what he was doing to her. He hated that they couldn't be together, and it was killing him that he had to give her up. Each time he tried to do just that, she always fought back gave him an alternative solution. He loved her and so he always gave in. He just hoped that whatever this was this time would not be one of those situations.
Elizabeth felt at peace here in the studio with Jason. This was their place and it had been for a really long time. Whenever she had felt the need to feel close to Jason she'd come here, and let the memories of the past they had here calm her and make her see that no matter what was going to happen in the future they would never really be over. So many years of situations that were beyond their control could have destroyed anything they felt for each other, but it hadn't.
She watched as Jason took his jacket off and tossed it on the couch and started to climb up the ladder. She had to smile when he leaned forward to start painting. She could get used to this angle and the way his jeans hugged his backside. She would never tire of looking at him; he was everything she had ever wanted and more. No way would she give up now. No matter how selfish it was to keep trying. She knew it could hurt her boys but she believed that they were all safer with Jason then without him and she needed to convince him of that.
"Are you going to stand there and stare at my butt all day, or are you going to help me?" he asked breaking into her thoughts.
Elizabeth couldn't help it she blushed at being caught. "Sorry, I couldn't help myself."
Jason smirked and turned back to what he was doing. It was like ignoring a huge elephant in the room to act like there was no sexual tension when they were together. That tension was always present always had been present in all the years they'd been friends, and in all the years that they'd been more then friends. "So, what are you going to do while I work up here?"
"Well, I guess I'll be right down here doing the bottom of the window area," she told him grabbing her brush and moving under where he was painting.
Jason watched as she started to work intently and he couldn't help it he wanted to see her smile. Finally he took his brush dabbed it in paint and flicked it at her. He laughed loudly as he watched the paint splash all over her upturned face and shirt. "Sorry I couldn't help it."
"You are in so much trouble Morgan," she said standing before him with paint dripping off her.
