Oh that was a great update!!!! I like that she tried to calm Brenda's fears, but she herself knew it was dangerous. I also like that Jason was treating her
as an equal, but still always a lil worried about her. Especially when he realized the guard recognized her, and he knew that she'd need his help. And
instead of leaving he was going to help her. Can wait to see them in action. Looking forward to the next update!!!!!!!!!!

The Quest - Chapter 5 | #43
|
Thanks for all the great feedback!
Back chapters are at my site: Blue Haze Chapter 5 Hefting her pack higher on her shoulder, Elizabeth made her way toward the main gate. She'd purchased everything she'd come for - dried meat, bread, fruits and vegetables. For a single person, it was food enough for a week. For the four of them, it would last two days. She dare not purchase more or else she'd raise suspicions. It was absolutely vital that she remain unnoticed. A chill went down her spine and she turned to look behind her. The street was crowded but no one seemed to be paying her special mind. She'd been having these feelings sporadically since she'd arrived but not once had she caught anyone following or watching her. All in all, she would be glad to finally be out of here. A surge of dread soured her stomach as she rounded a corner and saw the main gate framing the end of the road. She was going to have to deal with that over-amorous guard again. Sighing, she set her jaw and strode forward. It would do her no good to put it off. Just face him, get it over with and then she could get back to her squad. Squad. She chuckled to herself. Did three guards and one princess constitute a squad? She focused on her goal, the bridge on the far side of the gate and the woods beyond, and decided that she wasn't going to stop walking. Let the guard ask what he may, she would simply keep moving. Surely he wouldn't leave his post to chase her down. If he did… well, she'd deal with that possibility then. Closing her distance to the gate, Elizabeth cast a glance over her shoulder. At the far end of the road a group of guards had appeared. They didn't seem to be watching her, but the place they were loitering cut off her escape route. She had no choice now but to keep going forward. Turning her attention back to the gate, her steps faltered. She just noticed that there was no one on the bridge waiting to come into the city. There had been a long waiting line when she'd arrived; surely they all hadn't gotten through the checkpoint already. Then she caught sight of people grouped on the grassy plain beyond the bridge. It seemed very odd that they were standing around waiting instead of coming into the city. Something was wrong. Keep walking, she chided herself. The last thing she wanted was to appear guilty. Mentally steeling herself, she strode forward, her eyes locked on the gate and her hand resting on the hilt of one dagger. Crossing under the wide gate, she flicked a glance side to side and felt her stomach drop. The outer courtyard was edged with guards. There were at least ten and they all had broadswords in hand. This wasn't good. The guard she'd spoken to when she'd entered stepped in front of her and held up a hand to stop her. He wasn't smiling. It was only through sheer force of will that she kept herself from going for her sword. She would not win an outright battle; her best chance for escape lay in subterfuge. Very deliberately she widened her eyes. She needed to look innocent, as if she had no idea why she was being stopped. Then slowly, so as not to seem threatening, she turned her head to the right and then the left to take in all the details of the guard's positions. Looking again at the man in front of her she drew her eyebrows together and did her best to look baffled. "I don't understand what's going on. Is there a problem?" For a moment, the man looked torn, as if he were suddenly unsure of himself. "We need to check your identification." She pointed over her shoulder in the general direction of her backpack. "All of my papers are in my pack. I can get…" but he was shaking his head as if that was not what he needed. This time she didn't have to fake confusion. Why wouldn't they want to see her papers? How else were they going to check her identity? Then an older, paunchy man stepped out from behind one of the guards. His movement caught Elizabeth's eye and her heart dropped into her stomach. He was the baker who she'd asked for lingonberry cream tarts. Feeling panic set in, Elizabeth floundered for a moment trying to decide her best course of action. Of course the man was going to recognize her. In fact she could already see it on his face. If she denied knowing him she'd make herself look like a liar and raise their suspicions of her guilt. If she admitted to knowing him however, maybe she could convince them she was buying the tarts for herself. It was her best shot. Smiling broadly, she pointed at the baker. "I know you. I bought bread from you a few days ago." She nodded. "It was very good." The man squirmed under her gaze. Then he turned to someone she couldn't see and nodded. A finger of dread wormed into her gut. She didn't like this. Turning back to the guard, she tried to keep working the innocent angle. "I still don't understand what this is about." The man's eyes dropped, then his gaze turned to the person to whom the baker had nodded. Elizabeth's gaze turned as well and as it did, a man stepped out from behind the line of guards. His black hair and dark eyes contrasted with his fair skin, but he stood like a man used to wielding power - brash and confident. He clasped his hands behind his back and stared at her through hooded eyes. Elizabeth felt like a rabbit caught in a wolf's hungry gaze. She was trapped and could feel the noose tighten around her neck. The man let his gaze shift to the guard in front of her. "Excellent job Zander. You have more than earned your reward." The guard scowled and directed his question at the man. "What do you want to do with her Count Alcazar?" Despite her best efforts, Elizabeth gasped at the name. One corner of Alcazar's mouth twitched upward in a slight grin and she knew she'd given herself away. There was no more chance of talking her way out of this. One little slip and she'd sealed her fate. No one had moved in the heartbeat since the guard had addressed Alcazar. So with no other choice, Elizabeth seized control of the situation. Lunging at Zander, she caught him by surprise with her shoulder and knocked him off his feet. He fell with a grunt and she leapt over him, meaning to sprint for her life. However another guard had leapt at her when she had moved and caught her by the arm. Yanked backward, she went down on one knee. Then there was the sound of a hiss through the air and suddenly the guard holding her had an arrow sticking out of his chest. Jason! He was here! Elizabeth scrambled to her feet. Chaos had broken out around her. She heard grunts, shouts, clomping feet, and the sound of bows being drawn, but all she knew was that she had to run. Jason was somewhere in the crowd covering her escape and she had to make it to him. Another arrow zinged through the air taking down another guard and Elizabeth knew this was her only chance. However, just as she regained her footing, another hand grabbed her arm and she was yanked backward against someone's chest. An arm wrapped around her, pinning her in place and painfully squeezing her around her ribs. She struggled to get free but then the cold edge of a dagger at her throat stilled her. Turning her eyes as far as she could, she saw her captor. Alcazar. He chuckled and his warm breath fanned over her face. "Morgan! I know that's you out there!" Elizabeth blanched. Alcazar lifted her off her feet and walked forward several steps. His arm tightened until she couldn't breathe and the blade pressed harder against her throat until her head was lying back against his shoulder to keep her throat from being slit. "Show yourself!" Alcazar's voice rang in her ears, making her wince. Then from the crowd of people a hooded figure stepped from behind a cart. With a shrug, the cape dropped from his shoulders revealing Jason holding Alcazar in his crossbow site. "Let her go." He didn't raise his voice, but she heard him loud and clear all the same. Alcazar laughed and pressed the blade into the flesh of Elizabeth's neck. Elizabeth bit her lip to keep from crying out as the dagger cut into her skin. Tears filled her eyes as she felt the heat of her blood trickled down her neck. "Put the crossbow down or she dies." Alcazar's face was too close to hers. She could feel his cheek pressed against her forehead. The heat of his skin made her stomach roil with nausea. Something inside of her snapped. She wasn't going to die without a fight. Taking stock of her situation, she checked off a list of things in her favor. It was a very short list. There were no guards in front of her to block her escape. Her arms were free from the elbow down. She could reach her dagger. Moving carefully, she slid her right hand to the scabbard of her dagger. Alcazar did not seem to notice what she was doing. He was too occupied watching Jason laying his crossbow at his feet. Wrapping her fingers around the hilt, in one fluid move she pulled the blade, brought it up and around, and drove it deep into Alcazar's bicep. Howling with pain, Alcazar dropped her and leapt back. It was the chance she needed. Landing solidly on her feet, Elizabeth took off at a sprint across the bridge. Jason had barely taken his hands off his crossbow and seeing her running; he scooped it up and broke in a sprint toward her. Behind her she heard shouting and a bellow that sounded like the scream of a wounded animal. Then Alcazar was yelling orders. Kill him! Leave her alive! The air filled with the hiss of arrows and Elizabeth instinctively ducked as she ran. Jason slid to a halt at the apex of the bridge and holding out his hand for her, he fixed her with his blue eyes. "Jump!" Elizabeth didn't have time to think. She grabbed his hand and together they leapt.

Excellent action sequence. Elizabeth was doing her best to do some quick thinking on her feet, and Jason was there to provide backup. I love how she managed
to get free of Alcazar all on her own and now they're off to jump from a bridge.
Such fun! |

R!
Great update! I was glad in the end Elizabeth showed her true warrior side and didn't go down without a fight. I like to see her kick butt and take initiative and the fact that she got a good shot at Alcazar was just awesome! I bet that arm is going to be hurting for some time to come. Plus, the visualization of Jason coming out from behind the cart and pulling down his hood so reminded me of Robin Hood and his daring ways with a bow and arrow. Plus, I love Robin Hood!
As always you keep me excited for the next chapter! Jules |

I really liked this update! Elizabeth is no shrinking damsel in distress, she kept her wits and was able to get away! Yes, she had help from Jason but just
the same, she did it herself.
I love the image of them jumping of the bridge together. J |

Loved it....Great action...I must admit I was getting a little perplexed about Elizabeth...I was thinking she was going to be a great warrior and here she was
seeming like a big girly girl & not doing to well....Glad to see that she has that same spunk @ the end with Alczar that she showed Jase when they first
met! I can't wait for the update...I think as with "Two Ships" *hmm might go read again* that you are going to have me lurking like crazy for the
next update....Love this story!

THEY LEAPT!!!!! Crikey fuck...where did they leap to? Oh boy, you really wrote some good action there. Action is so hard to read/write and have it come across
as a nailbiter but i literally was on the edge there with that chapter. I know you'll do it eventually but i have to repeat...I really really REALLY want
to know Jason's feelings. jason's thoughts and Jason's desires toward Elizabeth.
I am so happy you are updating this story so quickly. You are such a wonderful writer. |

The Quest - Chapter 6 June 29, 2009 | #52
|
Hello all! Sorry I left Jason and Elizabeth hanging in mid-air for so long. Here's the next chapter and for those waiting for Jason's pov...
don't worry, it's coming soon. I promise.
Back chapters are at my site: Blue Haze and at RTN's new fan fic archive site: Beautiful Memoirs: The New FanFic Archive for RTN Chapter 6 There was a moment of freefall before Elizabeth hit the water. Then the impact yanked her hand out of Jason's and her speed forced her deep under water. Silty brown water flooded her nostrils and filled her mouth. Opening her eyes, she could barely see inches in front of her face in the muddy sluice of river water. Kicking furiously, she struggled to rise against the weight of her sword and backpack. Breaking the surface, Elizabeth coughed up water and then gasped a lungful of air. She'd come up facing the bridge and was shocked at how far downstream she'd been carried. The people on the bridge were too small to distinguish, so she couldn't tell which one was Alcazar, but she hoped he was choking on his fury. Then twisting in the water, she looked for Jason and found him floating several feet ahead. He was facing away from her and she gasped, there was an arrow in his back close to his right shoulder. "Jason!" She kicked toward him yelling his name. "Wait!" He half turned toward her and waved her away as an arrow sliced into the water between them. "Don't get close. We're still in range. They're aiming for me." With that warning, he reached over his head with his left arm, grabbed the arrow and with a grunt of pain, yanked it out. Then he sucked in a deep breath of air and dove under water as another arrow hit near him. Elizabeth gaped in shock at the spot where he'd been. Watching him remove the arrow from his shoulder had seemed unreal. Part of her didn't want to believe what she'd seen, but there was no way to deny it. Another arrow sliced into the water close to her and she swung around to see the bridge. Again she was further away than she expected. The current was sweeping her downstream faster than she realized. She was now near the outer limits of the archers range. That comforting thought was displaced quickly as a group of men on horses rounded the end of the bridge and turned to follow them. She and Jason were a long way from being safe. Struggling to stay above water against the weight of her sword and gear, she turned to watch for Jason. She didn't know where he would resurface, but she wanted to be ready when he did. Then she spotted a log. Ahead and to the left, caught in the shallows, she kicked and stroked through the water, just managing to reach it before the water swept her by. Heaving an arm over the log, she pulled and kicked to bring it into the middle of the river where the current was faster - and closer to where she hoped Jason would be. She craned her neck to look for him and started to get anxious when she didn't see him. He'd been under a long time now. A thousand different things that could have happened flew through head and she felt herself teetering on the cusp of panic when Jason suddenly surfaced next to her. "Jason!" The wave of relief she felt at seeing him took her by surprise and in her joy she very nearly threw her arms around him. Cringing as he threw his left arm over the log, Jason inhaled deep draughts of air. His eyes met hers, and then his gaze dropped to her neck and he scowled. "He hurt you." Elizabeth reached up and touched her neck where Alcazar had cut her. She'd honestly forgotten about it. Under her fingers she felt the slice, long but shallow, no more than a flesh wound. "It's not bad." How he could worry about her when he was the one who'd taken an arrow to the back was beyond her. "What about you? He visibly winced but refused to admit to being hurt. "I'll be fine." Then he swiveled to look back toward the city. "Riders just went out." Elizabeth pointed to where the men on horseback could be seen galloping in the clearing beyond the bridge. Trees began lining the bank and the river took a long slow bend to the left. In a moment, they lost sight of the city. Even though he could no longer see them, Jason's gaze hadn't wavered from the place where the horsemen were riding. "They won't be able to easily follow us. The forest will slow them down. If we stay in the current, we'll be stones ahead of them by nightfall." "Nightfall?" Only then did she realize that Jason had no intention of returning to Sonny. Then just as quickly she realized there was no way they could. They would lead Alcazar straight to Brenda. Still the thought of leaving them behind was painful. Her duty was to protect Brenda. Her eyes filled with tears but she set her jaw, stubbornly refusing to let them fall. Her frustration and guilt must have been plain on her face because Jason's tone softened. "There was no way we could have known Alcazar was there. You didn't do anything wrong." His lip hitched into a small grin. "You kept us from being captured. Alcazar seriously underestimated you." It was ridiculous how amazing Jason's words of praise made her feel. She thought she probably looked the fool, grinning and blushing like a schoolgirl, but she couldn't help herself. "The best thing we can do for Sonny and Brenda now is to lead Alcazar as far away from them as possible." Jason pointed ahead to where the river took a sharp bend and between the two of them, they kicked and steered the log smoothly through the turn. Elizabeth flicked a glance up and down the bank. The trees now filled both sides of the riverbank and beyond them was thick forest. The men on horseback would indeed have to slow their pace to follow them. Jason cast a glance at the sun overhead. "Sonny won't leave for another few hours, but with the two of them riding single, they can make it to the safe house in three days. Which gives us six days to meet them there." Elizabeth's stomach growled and she ignored it. It would be a while before they could eat. She turned her attention elsewhere to distract herself and caught sight of Jason cringing as he lifted his right arm out of the water to drape it over the log. Then her heart skipped a beat as a trickle of blood escaped the armhole of his tunic and reddened the water at his side. "You're bleeding!" Elizabeth's eyes were wide and she berated herself for not checking his wound sooner. Of course he would be bleeding. She shouldn't have taken his word that he was fine. "We have to stop. Your shoulder needs to tended to before you bleed to death." "I'm fine." If he expected her to drop the issue, then he was the one who was now seriously underestimating her. She wasn't about to let him off the hook that easily. "No, you won't be and you won't be doing anyone any good if you let yourself die." Reaching into her pack, she rummaged through it to find her bandana. It was nothing more than a square of cloth she used to cover her head in the sun or clean up with when they stopped. However, it would work equally as well as a pressure bandage. Bringing it out of her water logged pack; she hooked both arms over the log and did her best to balance herself as she squeezed it dry. "Undo your tunic." She didn't look at Jason when she issued the order; she was busy folding the damp cloth into a small square. When she did turn to him, she found him scowling at her. "It won't do any good to argue with me. Open your tunic and let me put this over the wound. It will stem the bleeding until I can dress it properly." Then she stared hard at him. She wasn't about to back down now. If it was a test of wills he wanted he was about to discover she didn't give up so easily. He didn't move. She raised an eyebrow at him. "Are you going to do it or am I?" His lips thinned, but his look wasn't exactly angry. Then raising a finger at her in warning, he slowly began undoing his vest. Elizabeth didn't move to help him even though she thought he looked like he needed it. Since he was cooperating; she gave him some latitude. They continued to float downriver, the current easing them around several long slow turns. Occasionally a wave broke over the log but none had enough strength to splash them. Once his tunic was undone, Jason pulled it open so that it gaped over his shoulders and around his arms. Elizabeth gently lifted the leather so that she could see the wound. It didn't look as bad as she thought it'd be. It was a clean hit, in and out. Only a smallish puncture showed where the arrow had entered his flesh. Tucking the square of cloth over the injury, she held it in place while Jason pulled his vest closed. Carefully sliding her hand out so not to dislodge the makeshift bandage, she smiled at him as he cast her a sideways look and began refastening his vest. "That wasn't so bad now was it?" Basking in the glow of victory, she couldn't help ribbing him. He snorted. For some reason the sound made her laugh. Jason turned to her, his eyes darkening to storm cloud gray and the look on his face made her pause. She couldn't place it. It wasn't quite angry or frustrated. Yet it was not at all happy or irritated. It was deadly serious and focused and she sobered under his gaze. Then he turned sharply and stared at the shoreline. "We are going to need to find transportation." And whatever it was that had passed between them was gone and Elizabeth was left breathless and off balance. Unsure of what had just happened, she pressed her lips together and focused on the task at hand. "What kind of transportation are we looking for?" He didn't turn to look at her. Instead as the river straightened, he pointed to the bank on the left where a cart drawn by two horses stood waiting for a ferry to return across the river. "That kind."
~*~*~
Sonny glanced at the sky. The sun was overhead and there was no sign of Jason or Elizabeth. He scowled. This wasn't good. Brenda sidled up next to him, her arms crossed over her chest. "What?" He saw no reason to lie to her. "Something's wrong. We need to leave." "But…" Brenda's shock rendered her speechless. "Elizabeth…" Sonny simply shook his head. "They aren't back. That means something has gone wrong. We need to get moving before we're found." "Shouldn't we give them a little more time?" "I've already given them more time." Sonny paced to the horses and untied their reins. He held out the reins of Jason and Elizabeth's mount for Brenda to take. "If Elizabeth was recognized, they are either captured or leading Alcazar's men away from us. We have to get on the move because it isn't safe here anymore." Brenda frowned at him, stubbornly holding her ground. "If you get caught then everything Elizabeth is doing will be for naught." Sonny shoved the reins at her and with a huff Brenda took them. He helped her into the saddle, and then shoving a foot into his stirrup he mounted his horse. "We are going to pick up the pace. Can you keep up?" The corners of Brenda's mouth lifted. She expertly guided her mount next to Sonny's. "Don't worry about me. You just make sure you stay in the saddle." Then with a wink, she kicked her horse and galloped away. Sonny grinned and with a kick, set his horse galloping after her.
~*~*~
Alcazar sat in his rooms while his personal physician attended to his arm. He was furious at himself and his men for letting Morgan slip out of their hands. He'd been so close to having the means to get Brenda back. In his rage, he balled up his fist and slammed it against the table, making everything on it jump. His physician only scowled at him and returned to stitching up the stab wound in his bicep. Curse Morgan. Morgan was the one who had taken Brenda from him. Had stolen her right out of his very own castle. It was infuriating. The man would die for his insolence. Alcazar's black eyes caught sight of the dagger lying on the table. It was the dagger that had been driven so forcefully into his arm that his physician had had to brace a foot against his shoulder in order to yank it out of his bone. It was the dagger that belonged to the woman who'd wanted to buy lingonberry cream tarts, Brenda's favorite desert. She had been his only possibly lead in finding Brenda and he'd been fruitlessly searching the countryside for her for days only to have her walk right into his hands. She was beautiful. He hadn't believed the baker when he'd described her, but she had been all he'd said and more. In many ways she reminded him of Brenda - slender, petite, dark hair - only her beauty was more delicate than Brenda's, less exotic and more refined. He frowned. It was that delicateness that had fooled him. She may have looked fragile and innocent, but she had proved to be a little spitfire. His lip curled into a grin. The paradox was intriguing. He picked up her dagger and slowly turned it, watching the light glance off its curves and edges. It was sized and weighted for a woman's hand and engraved on the gently rounded handle was an ornately scripted 'E'. His thumb caressed the monogram. He would meet this 'E' again and the next time he would be prepared for her. Added date to title.

Left suspened in air...well just for a little while :-)
The look shared between Jason and Elizabeth while brief...was still shared. He is finally figuring that he had better not argue with the little warrior...she was going to take care of his arm if he wanted it or not. Glad he noticed the wound on her neck...he was not too happy that Alcazar had injured Elizabeth. So Alcazar can't wait to meet up with Elizabeth again...and he noticed so much about her in such a short period of time...mostly not to underestimate her!! Thanks for the new chapter!!! |

So...now Elizabeth and Jason have to be alone and she had to tend to his wound. I love those kinds of moments. And he's concerned about her injury as
well. There was definitely some power in that look and I think it unsettled them both.
Brenda seems to have grown concerned for Elizabeth, but they've got their own worries to contend with. And Alcazar is now intrigued by the spitfire who reminds him of Brenda. I don't think that's going to bode well for any of them. He seems like a very obsessive nature kind of man and he could just as well become as determined to have Elizabeth as he is with Brenda. Lea |

Another great update!
Elizabeth can already get Jason to do as he's told...a makeshift bandage as they float down a river on a log... I love it! They are a perfect match, able to work together and obviously sharing some heat, even in a river. Well...now Alcazar is going to have a little obsession with Elizabeth, is he? Interesting... will he want her or just want to break her? J |

So will Alcazar forget about Brenda for the time being and hunt down Elizabeth? Or will he divide up his resources to find both women and claim them as his
own?
The look between them smoldered merely with words R! Only six chapters in and we can feel the heat between them, can't wait to see where it leads, and just how much they'll allow it to consume them. LOL, the vision of Liason suspended in midair forever while jumping into the water, determined expressions frozen on their faces, threw me into a fit of giggles! LMAO |
