PART 4

A/N- Sorry for the delays with the update but you know how the holiday season is. I am still very upset about the lack of good story lines on the screen, so fanfic is my drug for the time being. As always read and enjoy and drop a comment. Thanks, Robyn

Jason was tired for the long day at the warehouse. He was working twice as much as he was before the Russians decided to wage a war. He walked into the kitchen and grabbed a beer. He leaned against the counter and took a swig of the cold beer. How did this all come crashing down? Things had been going pretty smooth for him, as well as to be expected from one of the biggest Dons on the east coast. There was a truce between his organization the Zacharas and the the Russians. Elizabeth and him were going to take it slow, finally becoming a family. Spinelli had been staying out of trouble. Monica and him were finally at peace. Each forgiving the other for the mistakes that had been made. Then Sonny had to ruin it all, just like always. He had made a rash decision and killed Karpov. Bringing the mob war down on Port Charles. He finished his beer and grabbed another. Rubbing his hand through his wheat colored hair he pushed the door open that entered the living room. He stopped dead in his tracks. He smelled roses and peppermint. He hadn't smelled that scent a very long time. Well, since his beloved Grandmother Lila. 'Man, how I miss that sweet lady. As much as Grandmother loved me, she would be very disappointed with me right now. Letting my son be kidnapped. Not taking the chance to escape the mob when I had the chance. Hell, I even regret not taking the chance to leave after Michael was shot.' Jason said out loud to the empty room. Shaking his head as though that would clear it. Jason sat down on the couch and took a swig of his cold beer, closed his eyes and leaned his head back. He smelled it again, roses and peppermint.

"Jason dear I have never been disappointed in you. Maybe in your choices but never you."

"Grandmother?"

"Jason raised his head up and looked around the room, there sitting on his overstuffed arm chair, sat one of the three women that accepted him for himself. Lila sat staring at her youngest grandson with the same color azure eyes that stared back at her. "Yes, dear it is me, in the flesh, well maybe that was a poor choice of words, but nevertheless I am here."

"Gawd, I am losing it. Maybe it has something to do with the stress or maybe something is wrong…"

"Jason, you are not losing it. You are not dreaming, you are not imagining me. I am here because you need me."

Jason sat in awe of what he saw. Lila was really sitting in his chair, in all of her glory. There was pink glow surrounding her. He had never saw anything like this in his life. He was going to go along with the conversation.

"Grandmother I .I.. I don't know what to say."

"Well dear you never were one much on words."

As glad as I am to see you, I don't understand why you are here now."

"Because we like to let providence take it's course but sometimes we have to give it a nudge in the right direction."

"We?"

"Why, Emily and me of course. We watch over those we love and left behind. We hardly ever get involved but in certain cases it just can't be avoided."

"uh, okay, so are you going to tell me how to make peace in the middle of this war? Is that why you are here? Because I really don't see how you are going to be able to help me."

"Jason, I am here because you need to realize that no matter what happens, no matter where you are or what you do, family matters."

"Grandmother, I hardly have any family left, you know that. You, Emily, Alan, are all gone and the old man and Tracey have disowned me, although I am not complaining, and Monica and are on speaking terms but we are hardly close."

"And what about the most important ones of all, Elizabeth, Cameron, and Jake?"

"Uh,.. you.. a .. know about them?"

"Well, of course I do. I have watched you and that dear girl dance around each other for almost 9 years. I have watched you and her both run away from the feelings you've had. While, I never got involved, I have always guarded your love for one another. I know that on that blessed night that Jake was conceived you were together because you both let walls down and let love take control. And in the last two years I have watched you both cry danger as an excuse to not face your feelings and your fears. Well no more, my dear. You are going to finally claim you family!"

"Grandmother if you are all knowing, than you know that Jake was taken by the Russians! He was ripped from his brothers arms and almost blew up in a building because of me and what I do. Because of the life I have chosen. Elizabeth and I both agreed that it is best if I am not longer in their lives."

"Well you are both wrong. You can't tell me that she is safer by herself rearing those dear boys all alone. She is not guarded because you have decided it is too dangerous to be in their life. Is it safer for her to try and depend on that idiot Spencer boy? He is useless just like his father. He is the reason they were in the cabin alone with no guards or any type of defense. You wanted the safehouse, guards and the whole nine yards. You. You have always tried to make the best choices you could for the one you love but this time you are not.. You are walking away from the only family you have ever wanted. You are letting life and it's demons to control you choices."

"Grandmother, how can I put their lives in danger because it would make me happy? I won't risk them. I would rather die than see them hurt because of the life I have made. No, I won't do it."

"Jason, don't you realize that too many people know what Elizabeth, Cam and Jake mean to you. Aren't they safer with you with protection than without?"

"But what if someone was to come after them, I would never… no I can't do it."

"Jason, you love Elizabeth and your boys. You would never knowingly put them in danger. But life.. life is a risk we all have to take. A person can be walking down the street and get hit by a car. Should he have stayed at home because life may happen? No, you have to face life and the risks that come along with it. What you can do is face life with your heart open wide. Embrace what comes your way and learn from it. They are safer with you than with out. The love that you give them help prepare them for the bad things that happen in life, regardless if it is mob danger or a broken heart from their first love. The love and devotion that you give them will see them though. Only you can give them treasure, no other man can replace you in their lives. Do you understand what I am telling you, Jason? You have to be the one to provide, protection, love, devotion, and loyalty to Elizabeth, Cam and Jake. Love is always safer together than apart. I love you, dear boy."

"Grandmother..I..I.will think about all that you have said. I love you and thank you." Jason went to move closer to his grandmother and realized that she was gone. He rubbed his hands over his face. 'I really need to get some rest. If I keep this up Spinelli will stick me in Shady Brook.' As Jason climbed the stairs to his lonely bed he caught scent on the air, he could have sworn it was roses and peppermint.

A few days after Elizabeth had talked to Emily, she was finishing up her shift at the hospital. She couldn't believe that she had had a conversation with Em, but knowing Em anything was possible. She had helped her realize that her and the boys are safer with Jason than without, but the problem was now how did she convince Jason of that. She knew that if she called him that regardless of what he had said he would come to her, but he needed to decide on his own that his family would be safe with him. He was so stubborn. She told the girls bye and decided that she would visit Em's resting place before picking the boys up from daycare.

She stopped at the florist and bought a half a dozen yellow roses. Friendship roses, that's what Lila had always called him. By the time she arrived at the crypt it had started snowing. Snow always reminded her of Jason. She placed the yellow roses in the vase beside Emily's name plate and sat down on the stone bench.

"Hey Em, I don't know if you can hear me or not, I am sure that I won't get to talk to you like I did the other night, thank you for that. I have missed our friendship more than I can tell you. I talk to Robin but its just not the same. I know now that me and the boys are safer with Jason, but I have no idea how to achieve that dream. I want to follow my heart like you told me to but I think that Jason needs to realize that we are safer together than apart. If I call him, I know he will come, but there will always be that doubt if it was for the best or not. I don't want to wait for him to come to me but I have to. This may take forever. Jason is so damn stubborn and takes all the blame on his shoulders for everything that has happened. Gawd, I wish there was some way you could help me. I know I am asking for a miracle but how else is he ever going to come to me. He avoids all the places we would meet by accident. He is keeping his promises of no contact that is for sure. I love him so much Em. I just don't know what to do. I know I am rambling, you know how I do that when I'm confused.

She thought she was all alone, but she wasn't. Jason had decided to stop at the cemetery on his way back to his penthouse. He wanted to talk to Emily and Lila. He didn't think that they could hear him but after the experience he had a few days ago, maybe, just maybe, they could. He saw her sitting on the stone bench. She was wearing that winter white hat and coat that she had had on when she had came to the coffee shop the check on him after the war started. She looked like an angel with the snow blowing all around. He decided he would give her the privacy she deserved, he stepped behind a tree. The wind carried her words to him. He could hear everything she was saying and it melted his heart.

Lila was right. No one was going to love them more than him, no one would offer more protection than him, it was time for him to claim his family. He waited to she finished before he decided to go to her.

Elizabeth heard snow crunching under someone's feet. She slipped her hand into her purse and got her pink .38 special. She refused to be defenseless anymore. She slowly stood up like she was getting ready to leave and turned.

"Jason!" Elizabeth couldn't believe that it was him. Surely it was more than fate that had brought him here.

"Elizabeth, when did you start carrying a gun?" He looked down at her steady hands as she put the safety back on and slipped it into her bag.

"After Jake was kidnapped. I knew that I would be raising the boys alone and I decided that I would not be defenseless anymore. I would do anything to protect our.. my boys."

"Oh, a..a.. so are they boys doing okay?"

"They are great. You know children they are so resilent. It's always the adults that have the hard time adjusting." Elizabeth
could see that Jason was wearing the weight of the world on his shoulder. All she wanted to do was to pull him to her and comfort him but she knew that he would have to be the one to make the choice.

"I was just talking to Em. She always helps me make sense of things. I know it is silly but it helps me." Elizabeth could see his hands figeting in his pockets.

"No, it's not silly. It's nice to believe that maybe somehow she can still hear us. I talk to her and Lila too."

"Oh,.." Elizabeth couldn't stand the silence that was between them.

"Well, I guess I should go pickup the boys at daycare. It.. it was good to see you Jason. I guess I will see you later." Elizabeth began to walk past him. And like the past summer, he reached out and grabbed wrist like he was holding on to his life line. "Elizabeth..I..I.. can't keep my promise."

Elizabeth turned around and faced Jason. "Jason, I don't understand. What promise?"

Jason lead her closer to him by holding her hand. He reached out and touched her face. She couldn't help but to lean into it. He methodically rubbed his thumb on her cheek.

"The promise of no contact. I can't do that because I love you and our boys. I miss you in my life."

"Jason, we miss you too. I love you so much."

"The fact still remains that there is danger all around me. That is my life. I regret that choice but it is too late to change it. "

"So where does that leave us? What do you want to do? I know what I want and I know what I am prepared to face. But I have to know what do you want?" Elizabeth looked into his crystal clear blue eyes that were wet with tears now. She could see how hardthis was forf him.

"I..I. I want you and our boys. I want to be a family. I want to give you the love, devotion, respect and loyalty you deserve. I want to be the one to do that no one else."

"Jason I want that too. But we have said it before and something has always changed our minds. I have faced the worst and I survived. Hell, I didn't just survived. I rocked! I know now that I can face this life with you, but I can not face any life without you! I have made my mind up, now it is your turn. You have to decide that regardless of danger we will face that we will face it together." Elizabeth put her hands on the sides of his face. Praying that he would understand how much this meant to her.

"I do, I chose us. So are you still willing to marry me?"

"I thought you would never ask again. Yes, Yes, Yes!" Elizabeth launched herself into his arms. After the earth shaking kiss, "so where do we go from here?" Elizabeth asked.

"I say we go pick up our boys at daycare and go home. We have a lot of details to go over. Security, guards.." Jason was running everything through his mind.

"guest list and honeymoon destinations." Elizabeth chuckled. She had never felt more alive than right now.

"Whatever you want baby, whatever you want."

"So Grandmother, we didn't do too bad did we. That stubborn brother of mine took some more convicing but you handled him quite well."

"Thank you my dear. But this isn't over. We need to make sure that nothing comes between them."

"Okay, so what do we do now?"

"We sit, wait and watch my child, wait and watch."
