He turned around a pounded on the door, “Elizabeth!”  Something was wrong, he could feel it.  No time to find his key, he kicked the door in.  There Elizabeth lay at the bottom of the steps like a broken doll.

“Elizabeth!”  Jason hurried over to her and knelt beside of her.  Just as then Mary came running out of the kitchen area.

“What the hell happened?” Mary said she entered the foyer.

“I..I don’t know…Elizabeth, baby, you need to wake up.”  Jason brushed aside her chocolate curls from her pale face.

“Jason her leg is laying at an odd angle.  It’s broken.  We need..”

“Call 911, Mary!”

“Honey, listen, it will take the ambulance longer to find and reach us than if we just load her up and head to the hospital.  I’ll get Charlie and the van,  you stay her and try to get her to respond to you.”

“Okay.”  Jason had tears running down his face.  “Mary nothing can happen to her.  I …I..”

Mary patted him on the shoulder,  “I know, Hon, I know.”  She rushed off to reach Charlie on his walkie talkie.

Elizabeth could hear them talking but she couldn’t seem to find her strength to answer them.  The blackness that enveloped her was a comfort from the pain.

“Elizabeth, baby you need to wake up.  I’m scared and I don’t know what to do.  We are going to get to the hospital and see what’s going on.  Baby, please just open those beautiful eyes and look at me.  Please…” Jason sat rubbing her check with is hand.

Mary came back, “Charlie is pulling up front with the van.  He has had medical training during his time in the service and with everything else.  And we always keep supplies on hand because on a farm you just never know.  We will put on a back board and her neck in a brace, just in case.”  Jason just nodded.  She could see that the man was beside himself with worry.  He loved her, he loved her more than life itself.  Damn both of their mistakes. She had grown to love the silent man, she had watched him with her Beth and her..their precious sons.  He was a honorable, loving man, someone that was worthy of Beth.

Thirty Minutes later

They rushed the ER doors of Summersville Memorial.  “WE NEED HELP!”

A doctor and two nurses ran over with a gurney and loaded Elizabeth onto it.

“What happened?” asked the first nurse.

“She fell down the stairs, landed on her back.  Leg was in an odd position.  Her head had blood on the back of it where she hit it, she was unresponsive.”

“Why did she fall?”

“I..I don’t know.  She wasn’t feeling well this evening.  She had been vomiting and seemed weak.  She thought it was just a stomach bug or something. Her name is Elizabeth Webber”

“Are you her husband?”

Jason looked up from Elizabeth.  “Um..um no.  I’m her sons’ father.  She isn’t married, yet.”

“Okay, you need to stay here while we take her for test. Is there anything else you think we need to know?”

“She has lost some weight, but I thought it was just stress.  I didn’t realize..”

“Let’s just focus on right now okay.  I’ll be back when I know something.”

Charlie sat down and watched the young man pace the waiting room.  He loved Little One, there was no doubt in his mind.  Regardless of their past, those too had a love that seemed to still be strong.  He just prayed that it wasn’t too late for them.

Forty five minutes later the doctor, Dr. Willis, came back out to talk to them.

“She is stable. Her blood pressure was dangerously low.  Her left leg is broken and has been put in a cast.  She does have some swelling on the brain and is still unresponsive.  We need to run some more test to see what is going on.  I have ordered a full spectrum of blood work, hopefully we will have the results soon.  I really need to get back to her, we will keep you updated.”  He turned and left.

“I didn’t get a chance to ask…”

“Listen Jason, Dr. Willis is a wonderful doctor.  If he hurried then he has a reason.  He graduated the top of his class, but came back here because of family and he said that even rural areas need good doctors.  Let’s just let him do his job.  Come on, we’ll get some coffee.”

They had just sat down from getting coffee, when the nurse came out.  “You can come back now.  The doctor wants to talk to you and then you can sit with Ms. Webber.”

Jason looked over to Charlie.  “Go on son, she needs you.  I’ll give Mary a call and let her know what is going on.”

Jason nodded and followed the nurse.

He entered the room to find Elizabeth in traction.  She was hooked to all kinds of monitors, she was motionless.

Dr. Willis entered the room and flipped through the chart before he spoke.

“Okay, so Mr. ..?”

“Morgan, Jason Morgan.”

Okay so Mr. Morgan, Ms. Webber has suffered a severe fall.  Her leg was broken but as you can see it has been put into a cast and traction.  Her MRI shows swelling but it is not bad enough that we need to relieve it, so now we wait and see.  Her blood level is what concerns me.  I see that her adrenal gland results are extremely low.  I need to run a few more test but I am going to say there is a big possibility that she has Addisons’ Disease.  It's is a serious disease but it’s not life threatening if she is treated and remains on her medication.  However I need to see  what medicines she can take because of her condtion.”

Jason breathed a sigh of relief, it was something serious but not life threatening, something that could be managed.  “So she..she will be okay?  I mean once you find the medicine that she can take with her head injury, right?”

Dr. Willis gave Jason a strange look.  “No, sir, you misunderstood.  The medicine won’t be a problem with the head injury, but it could endanger the fetus.”
