Here is is, again no tomatos

“Jane, is that the patient you wanted to talk to me about?” Jason asked.

“Well sort of, I actually just wanted to know what you thought. You see Jane has amnesia, or we thought she had amnesia. The test results Patrick got back today point to something else, something he can’t fix.” Robin began, not sure where she was actually going to go with this conversation.

“And you wanted to talk to me about Jane? Why?” Jason asked confused.

“Well her situation, well she is sort of like you after your accident, and well sort of not.” Robin began again. “Her memory loss is most likely permanent. I might be able to get her approved for a drug treatment that would restore very little of her lost memories, but like with you, the tissue is dead, and there is no chance at reviving it. But what I really wanted to talk to you about was whether or not you wished you knew about Jason Quartermain.”

“What do you mean?” Jason said, pretty much shocked.

“If given the choice, knowing you would never get your memory back, do you think you would have been better off not knowing who you were or where you came from before your accident? If you woke up in a different city and had no name, or memory of your life to that point, would you have wanted to know who you were?” Robin asked wearily.

“I don’t think anyone has asked me that before” Jason admitted. “I mean, I spent so much time trying to get away from the Quartermains and making everyone accept that Jason Quartermain died in that car crash, I never really thought about it. A big part of why I went to work for Sonny and became who I became was because of them though, and because of you. You taught me a lot about living and life, and I can’t imagine who I would be if I didn’t have that to fall back on when I was entering the business. Why are you asking me this though?”

“Well its just, I know who Jane is, or who she was.” Robin admitted. “She was a collegue of mine. She was smart and beautiful, she had a career and children. But now, well she woke up and didn’t know who she was, and from what I can tell hasn’t had an easy time building her own life. I mean, you remember what it was like after you woke up, trying to figure out who you were, trying to find a job, a good place to live. Jane, well she woke up in a prostitutes hotel room, and that is the kind of people she has had to help her along. And well, I’m not sure I should tell her who she was, and if I do, what if she wants to see her kids?”

“What if she does, they are her kids right? Whether she remembers them or not.” Jason defended. “She has a right to know her kids”

“But what about the kids Jason?” Robin asked “She is never going to remember them. How will they understand that? Understand that while this is their mommy, it’s not. These kids already lost their mother, is it fair to them to  bring her back only to tell them, tell them what?”

“Well it sounds like you have already decided what your going to do.” Jason interrupted.

“That’s the thing, I have no idea what I should do Jason! I wish it were as easy as just telling her who she is and introducing her to her friends and family and kids again, and letting them reconnect and voila they can all be happy again, and whole. But if I learned anything from watching your experience, it was that you can’t force someone to love someone, and you can’t force them to remember, no matter how much it hurts that they forgot you.”

“But what if you introduce her to her kids and she remembers Robin. And if she doesn’t remember, what if she falls back in love with them? Do the kids? Does she not deserve the chance just because she lost her memory?” Jason accused.

“Can you do me a favor Jason? Can you meet me at the bridge tonight? I would really like you to meet her, and then you can see what I’m talking about.” Robin asked.

“I can’t tonight Robin, I’m leaving for Hawaii with Sam, but we will only be gone one day but I’ll meet her when I get back if that’s what you want.” He suggested.

“Are you taking Jake and Cam with you?” Robin asked.

“No just Sam, me, Spinelli and Maxie. Why?”

“You’re eloping then?” She asked solemnly.

“I thought you would be happy for me Robin. Whats wrong?” He asked, confused by her reaction.

“Are you happy Jason? Is Cameron and Jake?” Robin asked.

“Yeah, I guess. I mean they lost their mother and I am trying everything I know to try and give them a full life, and that includes a mother. And you know Sam can’t have kids, and she will make a great mom I think.”

“A better mom then Elizabeth?” Robin couldn’t help from asking?

“I’m not trying to replace Elizabeth, Robin. I’m just, I’m just trying to make it okay for them without her.” He admitted.

“We are having drinks around 5 O’clock at Jakes in honor of her. Its just a few of us from work, will you have already left by then? I was just thinking it would be nice if you made an appearance.” Robin suggested.

“I can probably stop in for one drink.” Jason relented. “But I have to go, there are some things I need to check on before I leave town. Are you okay? I mean you seem really torn about this Jane person.”

“Yea, just stop by for a drink” She smiled as he walked out the door. “and maybe I’ll know what to do by then.” She commented under her breath.

“Jane. I’m glad you could make it” Patrick greeted

“I wasn’t expecting the results so soon.” Jane admitted. “We had just sat down for breakfast when I got your call to come in.”

“Yes we were quite surprised, so what did you find out doc? Can you get our Jane her memory back?” EJ asked, suspicious of the doctor.

“Well, I did find something. During my testing I ordered a test for bacteria and parasites, and what I found is a rare bacteria that lives in water. I can treat the bacteria, but unfortunately, since it has been attacking the body for so long some of the tissue has died and I can’t revive it.” Patrick began.

“What does that mean?” Jane was curious

“It means that the majority of the memory loss you have suffered to this point is permanent. But without treating the bacteria, there would have been more damage. Right now its mainly affected your long term memory loss, but in time it would have attacked the area of the brain that stores short term memory and eventually would have attacked the other regions of the brain. It could have affected your vision, your hearing and ultimately your organ functions.” Patrick continued. “So its good that we found it Jane, if we hadn’t this would have eventually killed you. But I’m afraid, I can’t do what you asked me to do for you though. I’m afraid I can’t bring your memories back to you.”

Jane quietly digested the information before standing “Thank you” she told Patrick before walking out of the room.

“I have a prescription for the antibiotic you will need waiting for you at the nurses hub.” Patrick replied.

“Are you alright?” EJ inquired as the left the room, seeing the tears filling Jane’s eyes.

“I’m fine. I guess we should go find Caitlyn and head back.” She said defeated. “Besides, I knew it was a long shot. I’m just lucky he even agreed to see me. Right?” She asked, desperate for something positive to come out of the trip.

“We can find someone to give you a second opinion” EJ suggested “Go to Europe, South America? You don’t have to give up yet.”

“No, this was it. When I saw the information about this doctor, I don’t know it just clicked, and I just knew he could help me, and I did what I swore I wouldn’t do, I let myself hope for it, and now well, now I’m just paying the price that comes with hoping for things I guess. No we should just get Caitlyn and go back home, I spent my rent money for the month to pay for this trip, I need to get back to work or else I’m going to find myself back on Cathy’s couch.”

“If that’s what you want to do.” EJ stated. “But I could lend you the money for your rent Jane. You should never have to sleep on Cathy’s couch, if you ever need anything, I want you to come to me Jane. I want you to trust me. Okay?”

“Okay” Jane responded, glad to have someone with her on her side for once.

“Okay then, you go back to that nasty bar and wait for Caityln and call me when your ready to head out.” EJ replied after giving her a quick kiss on the forehead. “And Jane” He called as she began walking down the docks “For what its worth, I’m glad your still just Jane. You are perfect the way you are.”
