All serial dramas are soaps. Vampire Diaries, SOA, all dramas with continuing stories are soaps. They might not want that association, but that's what they are.

Yep.  It's really funny whenever someone mentions to the actors of these shows that they follow the soap format a lot of them get really upset.smiley: eyes

Kurt Sutter who writes and produces Sons of Anarchy admitted his show is like a soap, but he also said it was written better. He is definitely right!
I love how he has a You tube blog and answers fans questions, he loves to read fans opinions etc. That is brilliant on his part because a show cannot survive without the fans. He also said that writers have to take the blame when a show fails. Smart man!
I've written to KS. He actually responds and seems grateful for the feedback. It's not just a thanks for the letter, keep on watching from him.

KS has far more autonomy than most soap writers (he'll have even more, now that ratings have shot up). Most soaps are almost written by a committee, with obvious results. The P&G soaps were successful, until P&G execs decided they should play a role in the writing. Ugh. Not a creative spark anywhere, and they had no knowledge of the genre. Network suits never used to interfere with soaps, now they're very heavy-handed in their interference, and the soaps have suffered for it.

ABC waits until a primetime show becomes popular, then the suits try to take over. Their interference was obvious with shows like Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty, which were better before they got big ratings.

ETA: KS should co-write a show with Brian Frons, then lets see how creative he can be.

Gemma and Carly are two peas in a pod.
