Liz

It’s been a jam-packed few weeks for GH’s Elizabeth, who blew the secret of Lulu being Ben’s mom wide open, only to end up in the crossfire when babynapper Obrecht took her hostage. This week, life won’t get any calmer for the heroine, as the kidnapping drama comes to a boil at her house and she’s at the center of things when tragedy strikes. The character’s storyline prominence is a welcome change for fans of Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth), who’ve been clamoring to see Liz return to the spotlight. Head Writer Ron Carlivati says that bolstering Liz’s plot presence “was a goal when I first arrived” early in 2012. “We set up a story with Sam and Jason and had weaved Liz into that, with Sam and Jason breaking up and Liz and Jason poised to come together,” he notes. “We had a lot of plans for that to play out a lot longer, but then Steve [Burton, ex-Jason, now Y&R’s Dylan] left, so we kind of had to wrap it up sooner rather than later. My plans to kind of explore that a little more didn’t pay off, so we had to regroup and yeah, Liz did take a little bit of a backseat for a while.”He knows that this didn’t sit well with Herbst’s loyalists. “Look, I appreciate that there are passionate fans of individual characters, but it is an ensemble,” he offers. “Certain characters are going to shine; it depends on the story. And this is when her story came along and I’m thrilled to have her in it. I think that we have major players now; it’s a better story now, rather than throwing Liz into a story because people wanted her in story. I think this is the right story. We have Ric in the picture, Nikolas in the picture. I think this is the time to do it. I think sometimes, fans just have to be patient. It’s not always on their timetable, unfortunately, but I always knew that Liz would eventually find her way back into story. It just took time. I often say it’s like turning a giant cruise ship when you’re steering a soap opera. There are so many people on the canvas and it’s hard to steer the stories when you have so many stories going on. Sometimes, it’s hard to get certain ones front-and-center. It takes a while. I’m excited about the storyline and I’m sure that the audience is, too.”For her part, Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth) is delighted that Liz fans are basking in her on-screen resurgence. “I’m glad the fans feel that way, because I do, too!” she beams. Good Things Come To Those Who Wait: Elizabeth (Herbst) is having a moment in the storyline sun.
