After Manny's hostage attempt is thwarted by Jason, he decides to go with a different approach and goes after Sam. She is shot and gravely injured. Jason is forced to decide whether or not to proceed with surgery. The decision weighs heavily on Jason and he fears the outcome. Elizabeth acts as a sounding board for him and encourages him by saying that Sam will pull through because she has him to come back too.

Blaming himself for the injuries inflicted on Sam, Jason walks away from her. He feels that he and his life is a danger. He struggles with his decision and finds a friend in Elizabeth again. Having problems in her own relationship, she fears Jason is making the wrong decision in pushing Sam away. She wonders if he can control his feelings enough to forever live without the possibility of falling in love. He tell her that he can try but it is obvious Elizabeth worries about him being alone.
Jason is shot during an altercation with Manny. Fortunately Elizabeth catches him and hurries to get him treatment. Between caring for Jason while he is in the hospital, Elizabeth is also faced with the destruction of her relationship with her husband Lucky. She is shocked to walk in on him with another woman and the fact that the relationship has lasted several months. She finds her world is tumbling down around her, with no way of stopping it.
Jason is soon released from the hospital with the renewed hope of working things out with Sam. He goes to see her, only to find her on the floor with his worst enemy. He returns home completely devastated and lost, only the hear a knock at the door. It's Elizabeth and through the hurt and the pain, they find long awaited comfort in each other's arms.

Elizabeth and Jason both realize that nothing can come from their night together, but both agree to "no regrets". Neither knows what would have happened to the other had they not found strength in each others arms. Elizabeth leaves, to go home, and after speaking to Lucky, decides to give their relationship another chance and support Lucky through his drug addiction.

Weeks late, Elizabeth is struck with the realization that she is pregnant. During an argument with a strung out Lucky, he accidentally shoots at her and therefore finding out about her pregnancy. Elizabeth is concerned for her and her children's safety after the incident with Lucky and therefore moves out. Lucky, now mistakenly thinking the child is his, decides to get clean and go to rehab for the sake of his child.
However Elizabeth knowing that there is a strong possibility that the child could be Jason's, take a paternity test. She is not surprised to see the results confirm that Jason is indeed her baby's father.
In another cause of missed opportunity Elizabeth tries to inform Jason that the baby is his, only to find out that he was wrongly told different. In an effort to comfort Elizabeth, he states that "it's for the best", thus causing Elizabeth to keep the news to herself. She is weary to hurt Jason and Sam's reconciliation by announcing the truth.
Soon after Elizabeth collapses upon hearing that Jason was caught in hail of bullets. She rushes to the church to say a prayer for him and is surprised to find him bleeding on the chapel floor. She ends up confessing the truth to a delirious Jason, begging him to pull through by telling him the words she hopes will save him. "It's not Lucky's, Jason......this baby is ours." Elizabeth is able to get Jason to her studio and safely remove the bullet, lodged in his leg. Jason is thankful for Elizabeth's assistance and appreciates the fact she saved his life. It is obviously Jason doesn't remember hearing the news regarding the baby and as he passes out from the pain medicine, Elizabeth reflects on all the things she has never told him.

Elizabeth continues to care for Jason and revisits the past by bringing him a travel book on Italy, regardless of the fact he has yet to remember her chapel confession.

Once healed he leaves the studio, while Elizabeth continues to struggle with her decision to keep the truth from him. They continually find themselves thrown together and they share a conversation on the Nubridge. Elizabeth confides in Jason about her marriage and the choices that lead her to where she currently is in her life.
Jason admits that sometimes loving someone means their happiness means more than your own. This hits home with Elizabeth when he continues on to say that while it's tempting to play God and make choices for others, that it means you don't trust the other person. She continues to wonder if she is making the right choice or not, in keeping her secret, especially when Jason mentions that without trust, love doesn't last. His parting words affect Elizabeth more than Jason knows.
With the guilt overwhelming her, Elizabeth confesses to Father Ruiz that the baby is Jason's and that she loves him. She continues on to admit that Jason can never know, to prevent him from sacrificing his own life and his current reconciliation, for her or the baby.

When the Metro Court is taken under siege, Elizabeth is one of the many citizens of Port Charles that is taken hostage. Jason, forever being the hero, works with Spinelli to gain access to the locked down hotel. Posing as one of the gunmen, Jason overpowers the ringleader, only to have to have gunfire to break out. He realizes that a bomb is about to go off and is able to grab Elizabeth and pull her into the elevator before the hotel explodes.
While in the elevator, Elizabeth becomes emotional and tells Jason, "You're the reason this baby is alive. Jason, Lucky's not the father of this baby, You are."
Jason is shocked and hurt that Elizabeth kept this information from him. He wonders if she had intended to tell him the night she came to see him.
She explains that Carly had already told him otherwise and that she was still planning on telling him but it appeared that he was relived to hear that the baby was not his. Jason thought that was what she wanted and tried to avoid letting her see how much the news had affected him.
Once again misunderstanding and miscommunication prevented them from telling each other their true feelings. Something Elizabeth realizes when she admits that she was wrong because while Lucky was no longer Lucky anymore, Jason was the same Jason she had always known. She would never regret the life they created by coming together for one night and is thankful Jason has always been her safe place when she needed him.
Jason tells Elizabeth that when Carly told him he wasn't the father, he felt like he lost something. And every time he saw her, especially when she started to show..he'd have a moment when he'd think that could have been my child....and now she's telling him that it is. He knows that this is complicated and he's sorry for anybody that's going to be hurt but they made this child together and he can't regret that miracle. He wants their child - he wants it more than anything.
Jason asks Elizabeth how she feels. She says "relieved." She didn't want him to hate her. Jason tells her that he doesn't think he could ever hate her.
Jason asks Elizabeth to just marry him, so he can give their child the best life they can - together.
She knows in her heart that while she wants nothing more than to marry Jason, they can't for the sake of their significant others. Jason tries to convince her that he can provide her and her children with a good life. She explains that she wants to, just like she wanted to be a famous artist who lives in Italy or win a Gold Medal in figure skating - they're beautiful dreams but they're not real.
Jason and Elizabeth decide, for many reasons, not to tell Sam and Lucky the truth about their baby.

Jason and Elizabeth decide, once more, to do the unselfish thing and allow Lucky to continue believing that his is the baby's father. The decision weighs heavily on them both, causing them both to ache and yearn for what they believe they cannot have. Throughout the majority of her pregnancy, both Jason and Elizabeth find themselves drawn to one another, thus increasing the agony over their decision.

Late into Elizabeth's pregnancy, Jason comes over to her home to check on her, due to a widespread power outage caused by a thunderstorm. Upon arrival Jason finds Elizabeth collapsed and unconscious on the floor, it is apparent that she is in labor. He rushes her to the hospital and with obvious pain and worry, he awaits news on her condition. Eventually their baby is finally born, healthy. Jason is barely able to tear himself away from his son and almost admits the truth to Lucky. However he hides the truth and his hurt and walks away. He later finds out that Elizabeth named the baby boy "Jacob Martin", effectively giving their son Jason's initials.

Elizabeth takes Jake and Cameron to the park one afternoon. She helps Cameron tie his shoe and when she turns around, Jake is gone.

Elizabeth tells Jason that Jake is missing. She explains that she didn't see anything and wonders if someone took Jake because they found out he was Jason's son. Jason tells her it's not her fault. He thinks the kidnapping is random which upsets her more. He wants to focus on getting Jake home. He promises to do whatever it takes to bring their son home, and pulls Elizabeth into an embrace.
Jason is able to find Jake, who was taken by a distraught grieving woman who recently lost her own child. Jason takes Jake home, and places him in Elizabeth's arms.

Jason and Elizabeth continue to fight the pull they feel towards one another. With words of encouragement from their friends, each decide to confess their feelings to the other.
While taking her boys on a walk through the park, on her way to meet Jason, Elizabeth is accosted by two armed men. They threaten Elizabeth and her boys by telling her that they will use them in order to get to Jason. Conveniently Sam shows up and scares off the gunmen, even though later it is determined she is the mastermind behind the stunt.
Later that day Jason finds Elizabeth on the Outlook. He is excited she called and has news to share with her. He goes on to tell her that he wants to create a life with her, a home together. He asks if she is willing to try.
Heartbroken because she knows the next words will destroy his dream, Elizabeth forces herself to tell Jason about the earlier scene in the park. She tells him she's sorry because what he said about them sharing a life together was beautiful, but he's going to take it all back now. He says he knew it was too late, that it was always too late for them but he knows that in order to keep her and Jake and Cameron safe it would be better to stay out of their lives. He explains that he could hire guards and do everything possible but he couldn't take her coming to him again, telling him Jake had been kidnapped for a second time.
Their eyes are filled with tears, knowing this is the last time they can be together. Jason begs Elizabeth to promise to come to him if Jake ever needs him and she promises. Jason apologizes for it taking him so long to figure it out. Elizabeth turns away from Jason's tortured expression and apologizes to him as well, for hurting him.
Jason chokes up as he admits to Elizabeth that he loves her and should have told her before. Elizabeth, who has ached to finally hear these words, tells him that "well now is what matters" and confesses that she loves him and always will. They share a bittersweet goodbye kiss and a shared moment from their pasts as they lean on each other, then Elizabeth walks away.

During the Black & White ball, Elizabeth finds herself lost in the darkened mansion with a psycho on the loose, attacking people. Jason finds her by accident and takes her somewhere safe. They end up in the stables where Jason teaches Elizabeth how to fire a gun. He explains how she should protect herself and that it is Anthony Z that is terrorizing everyone. She begs him to be safe and they share a brief but sweet kiss.

Jason directs others to the stables as he continues on his hunt for Anthony. Sam and Lucky, who are now dating each other, decide to go to the stables, after Sam learns that Elizabeth is there. Sam wastes no time tearing into Elizabeth when Jason arrives. A fight breaks out between the foursome and Jason confesses that he is Jake's father. Elizabeth is stunned but understands Jason's need to finally reveal the truth. Once they are alone again, Elizabeth admits to him that she thinks she loved him since the first night he saved her at the bar. Jason smiles and says that he remembers that night - how sad she was, how angry, and wow, how beautiful. He had no idea that someday he'd be in love with her or that she would be the mother of his child. He leaves soon after to continue in his mission, as Elizabeth is captured by Anthony. Jason finds her standing on the ledge of the parapet with Anthony aiming a gun in her direction. He asks Jason to make a choice because someone is going to die and wonders if he is willing to die for love. Without any hesitation, Jason sets down his gun and joins Elizabeth on the ledge. Luckily they are able to work together and as a team they take down Anthony.

Jason discovers that Emily, his sister has been strangled to death. He tells Elizabeth and they contain Nicholas, who is distraught over his fiancees death.

While looking on, Jason witnesses Elizabeth say a heart wrenching goodbye to her best friend. Both so overwhelmed with grief, they attempt to comfort the other. Assuming that Anthony is responsible, Jason struggles with guilt that somehow this was his fault despite Elizabeth's objections.

Days later, Elizabeth attends Emily's funeral and is surprised to find Jason in the back of the church, since Monica forbid him attending. After the funeral, Elizabeth returns home to find Jason sitting in her living room. He is obviously in pain over Emily's death. Elizabeth crosses the room to him and without words, they embrace.

Page 34:

Elizabeth leads Jason up stairs to her bedroom and they make love for the first time since Jake's conception. Afterwards they talk about Emily's death and how much they needed and loved each other.

Audrey shows up with the boys and Jason asks if he should leave, but Elizabeth tells him that she wants him to stay. Jason tells Cam about Emily, while Elizabeth and Jake watch. Elizabeth asks Jason to hold Jake while she cleans Cam up and Jason has a rare moment with his son. When Elizabeth comes back down, Jake is asleep and Jason comments that Jake has his hands. Jason tells Elizabeth how peaceful it is at her home and she tells him how glad she is that he came. Jason smiles and tells her that he had no other place to go. They once again tell each other how much they love the other, share a kiss and Jason leaves everything he needs and loves in the little house with the blue door.
Elizabeth calls Jason to meet her in a room at the Metro Court. When he arrives he is worried something is wrong but Elizabeth tells him that she realizes that life is too short, she loves him and needs to be with him. She pulls him into a kiss and they make love. Later Jason tells her that he is glad that she called. Elizabeth talks about the death of Georgie and how it has opened her eyes to the fact that they can't take what they have for granted and have to find away to be together. They discuss possibly telling the world that Jake is Jason's son, but they each still fear Jake's safety if the truth came out. Elizabeth suggests they have a secret affair. They agree that whenever they can, they'll meet in secret. A couple of days later Jason surprises Elizabeth with a safehouse were they can continue meeting. They share many wonderful times at the safehouse; Elizabeth paints a portrait of Jason and Jake, dinners, and several evenings. It turns into their safe place, where they can just be Jason and Elizabeth. They also have a few clandestine meetings at the hospital and in Jason's office. Every opportunity to be together is taken, especially when they are so few and far between.

Page 36:

Jason comes back from his trip to find Elizabeth waiting for him at his penthouse. Elizabeth realizes, after witnessing a father and son at the hospital, that she asked Jason to make the wrong sacrifice. She goes on to tell him that he is Jake's father and deserves the right to raise him. She tells him that while nobody's life is perfect, the best they can do for their children is just to love them. Jason is taken back and is hopeful but remains cautious.
He tells her that she is just trying to do the right thing for Jake and Cameron, but she quickly interrupts to let him know that she's also doing it "for us". She admits that she loves him and wants to share a life with him, if that is what he wants. He's taken back and tells her it's what he wants, it's all that he wants. He tells her that he wants a life with her, a family with her.
Now it's Elizabeth's turn to be taken back and questions if he realizes what he just said. Jason smiles says yeah. Elizabeth wants to make sure there is no miscommunication and that what she thought he said was that he wants a life with her. Jason teases that sounds exactly like what he said, but Elizabeth is curious about what that means. Jason hedges and Elizabeth stops him, telling him that now is not the time to be showing off his answer avoiding skills. Afraid he might be be pushing her to hard, Jason tells her that it's up to her and what she wants. Somewhat frustrated with him, she stops him and wants to know exactly what he wants. He pauses and finally admits that he wants to marry her. Elizabeth doesn't want Jason to feel pressured, but Jason cuts her off and says he told her he'd marry her twice before and she said no both times. She lets him know it wasn't because she didn't want to - he has no idea how hard it was for her not to say yes - she wants him to ask her again.
Jason takes a deep breath and asks, "Will you marry me?". Elizabeth jumps into his arms with a resounding, "Yes!"

Page 38:

Soon after Jason and Elizabeth become engaged, they learn that Michael was shot. Jason believes this reaffirms that his life is dangerous and heads to Elizabeth's home.

He comes to tell her that he was wrong and that he doesn't think he can do this. She tries to convince him that they can run away together but Jason says that he can't leave the life. She even tries to let him know that while the boys can't see him, she still can. Jason just can't let himself risk her life either but tells her that if she calls, he'll come. He tells her this is the last time he'll come to her and all he wants is for her and the boys to have a safe and amazing life. Both have tears streaming down their faces, tears from all the dreams they've lost. Jason leaves with one last goodbye kiss. He has no more see you later's left.

Page 39:

Jason is heartbroken when Michael is taken to a long term facility. As he's driving home he sees Elizabeth stranded on the side of the road with a flat and her keys locked in. He stops and she runs into his arms.

Frustrated that he can't get in her car, he slams the roof down. Elizabeth attempts to comfort him but he pulls away and apologizes. It is obvious he is hurting and lost and all Elizabeth wants to do is help him. She grabs his hand and together they find an abandoned cabin, to take shelter in.
Once inside, Jason finally admits to Elizabeth the guilt he feels over Michael. He failed him, he says. Elizabeth tells him that it's not his fault. She knows how much he loves Michael. She mentions when they first met and how Jason had just given Michael up and how much it hurt him to do so. Jason remarks that he should have given Michael up sooner, Elizabeth continues to defend him. He knows she only does it because she loves him. Elizabeth doesn't let that deflect her, reminding Jason of how important he was the first year of Michael's life. So many years ago he told her that sometimes when something happens, it happened and you can't change it, only learn from it. She goes onto tell him that he will always be a selfless and loving father and will always be the man she loves.
Jason, in obvious pain over her words, tells her that he can't do this. She asks him if he's not going to care anymore, love anymore. He just can't take losing the people he loves anymore. She tries to make him understand that you can't just go back and stop them from being friends or stop herself from loving him. She dealt with it every time he walked away, she hurt every time they had a chance of happiness and he disappeared from her life. She is the one left with all the dreams and happiness and nowhere to put it. And no matter what happens, she can't help but imagine what could have been, ways it could have worked and it doesn't stop her from missing him or thinking about him or wanting what she can't have. Jason asks what he can do to make this easier and apologizes but Elizabeth doesn't want him sorry, she loves him just the way he is. Jason tells her that he loves her so much and that she's perfect.
He wishes he could spend the rest of his life with her, but he can't and she knows it. Jason thanks her for taking care of him and admits he would have lost his mind if not for her. They exchange I love you's and Elizabeth gets in her car and leaves.

Page 41:

Jason and Elizabeth attempt to stay away from each other, but fate has other ideas. They constantly find themselves running into each other in various places around town - Kelly's, the hospital. Each time the longing and wanting is obvious but they continue to try and keep the distance.

However, Elizabeth goes to the docks in hopes of finding Jason. She finds him there looking out at the water and tells him that she knew if she found him there that she was meant to. He responds that she shouldn't be there, but Elizabeth stands her ground and tells him that she loves him and wants to be there for him. She can tell he is reluctant and continues on to say that she can see how upset and lonely he is and that she wants to do something for him, even it is just listening.
Jason finally opens up and admits that Sonny has turned on him. He goes on to explain how he bargained with Sonny to give up Morgan, like he gave up Jake. Elizabeth is able to tell right away that Sonny blames Jason for losing his children. He admits that Sonny thinks that he had him give up custody of Michael and Morgan in order to make giving up Jake ok for Jason. Elizabeth disagrees because she was the one that asked Jason to give up Jake, but Jason stops her and tells her that it was both of their choice. She can tell that the circumstances are bringing up painful memories of Jason giving up Jake and tells him that she knows how badly he wants to be with Jake.
He says that he misses them both so much. He reiterates that it has to be this way because of the choices he has made.

Page 42:

After all the run ins and hits and misses, Elizabeth decides that enough is enough and head's to Jason's office with the intention of telling him that she is tired of staying away. Jason says she shouldn't be there, but she wants to know why; if Carly can, why can't she. Jason is curious as to when she started following Carly's example. Elizabeth explains that she was fearless when she first came to town and she liked who she was then, that she went after what she wanted with no apologies and that's what she's decided to do now. She wants him, and she knows he wants her too. Jason tries to stop her, but she says she's tired of being miserable. She wants them to find a way to be together, but Jason doesn't know how they justify it after what happened to Michael. Elizabeth says that Jason doesn't get to make her choices for her and that life is never really safe, but Jason argues that his job and thus life goes against everything she believes in. Before they can go any further, Cody interrupts to announce Karpov's arrival.
Later, Jason opens his penthouse door to a determined Elizabeth, who wants to finish their conversation. Jason says he is tired of hurting her, because all he can do is continue to tell her that he can't make her happy. She makes it clear that it is her decision on what can and cannot make her happy. Jason has no doubt that for a while it would work but sooner or later someone is going to get hurt and he might do something she can't forgive. She makes it clear that she knows that they don't have a future but they do have the present and that is what she wants from him. She has tried and tried to stop thinking about him and talk herself out of all of this but it doesn't work because all she sees is him. He tells her to look at the way he spoke to Karpov, because that is who he really is. He continues that every time he was shot and she nursed him was because he was shooting at someone else and sometimes they died. His life is measured by kills and when given the chance to run away from her and the boys, he chose to stay. He wonders what part of that makes her love him.

Elizabeth admits that she can't explain it. It's not logical. That's why it's love.

She goes on to talk about their first night together. She went to him because she needed someone to help her while she was lost and confused, but that it was more than that. He has always been the man that she wanted to be with it. Jason admits that she saved him that night and he wouldn't have known what to do had she not shown up. Elizabeth says that it was the one night they were able to escape reality and that she has been trying desperately to get that night back, because for the first time Jason let her in. She wants to know if it is possible to do that again.
He argues that it's wrong for a mother to put herself at risk, but Elizabeth thinks she can still make a place for him. She is not afraid, but he is. He knows that he wouldn't be able to take it if something happened to her. But Elizabeth knows that she can't take being without him. Once again Jason doesn't think she knows what she's getting herself into but she promises that she would walk away if it was too painful. She continues with a story about a Professor who says that there are brick walls in life for a reason. They're there to prove how badly you want something.
She doesn't want Jason tell her that it'll be easy or that there won't be brick walls. She just wants him to tell her how he feels. Jason says it doesn't matter how he feels. Elizabeth contends that she's standing in front of him with her heart in her hands, don't tell her it doesn't matter. Jason explains that he's just trying to protect her, but she doesn't want that. She wants him to tell her if he feels the same way or if she's just crazy, but Jason stops her. He tells her that she's not crazy and kisses her. He picks her up and takes her upstairs to his room, only to be later interrupted.

Elizabeth is surprised when she receives a call from Jason to meet her. They meet at Elizabeth's studio and she can't help but be somewhat confused as to why he wants to meet. Jason tells her that things are going well with the business and he was thinking about taking some time off. He mentions going to Italy and she says "oh", only to have him lean down and say that he was hoping she would go with him.

Elizabeth is shocked and asks if he really just asked her to go to Italy with him. Jason, knowing that he surprised her tells her yes and then starts describing the villages in Italy that he chose for them to go to. He has never been there and he wanted to make it special by choosing a place that they can both see for the first time together. Elizabeth wonders if he remembers the globe that she got him when he was hiding out there and he confirms that he does. She confesses that she has wanted to go to Italy ever since that day. Jason is excited over the idea that they can be where no one knows them and they don't have to hide. He tells her that he wants to go as soon as possible and the only thing left for him to do is attend Sonny's wedding. Elizabeth tells him that Sonny's wedding is the next day and she asks if he wants to leave tomorrow? He does and hopes that is ok with her. Elizabeth is excited over the possibility of her dream of seeing the light in Italy with Jason coming true and giddily replies yes!
However, Jason never shows at the airport due to Kate being shot during her wedding to Sonny. He calls Elizabeth to apologize and explains what has happened with Kate. Called into the hospital, Elizabeth comes off the elevator and locks eyes with Jason. She is angry and refuses to let this be another reason for Jason to pull away from her. He takes her to Kate's room to show her that this could be her future if she insists on staying with him. He wonders if she would be so quick to ignore the danger if she was the one laying in that bed and about to leave her sons without a mother. Elizabeth takes one last look at Kate, and walks out of the room.

Elizabeth arrives early to Robin and Patrick's wedding and is surprised to find Jason at the front of the alter. He turns to her and they lock eyes, both acknowledging to themselves how right the moment is. Elizabeth thought she was dreaming.....it wouldn't be the first time she imagined him waiting at the alter for her. Jason smiles and tells her how beautiful she looks.
