The Reckoning
Jason Morgan threw open the door to his girlfriend's apartment with a gun drawn. He found her sitting on her couch with an open book. "What's going on?" Elizabeth asked as she placed the book down on her couch and got up, from under a throw blanket, to close the door. Jason did not stand still for long. Leaning back on her door, Elizabeth admired his machine like precision as with gun drawn, he swiftly searched to ensure they were alone.
"Where's Francis and Milo?" Jason asked out of breath.
"I sent them home for the night," Elizabeth informed him, "What's going on?" Jason stopped cold in front of her. Elizabeth reached out to him so she could better see what she thought was a gash on his temple. She was right, "Jason?"
"We're being hit," Jason informed her.
"Do we know by whom?" she asked.
"Ric," Jason tried to hold his hatred in.
"What happened?" She cupped his cheek in the palm of her hand.
"Ric ambushed Sonny in his penthouse," Jason answered.
"Is he all right?" Elizabeth put her hand on his chest and locked eyes with him, looking for some assurance. Jason pressed the top of the gun to his forehead, closed his eyes and took a breath.
"Sonny's dead," Jason answered.
"What?!" Elizabeth shook her head, "No…" Jason's stoic resolve would not allow him to cry, but Elizabeth saw the tears under the surface of her young lover's ice blue eyes and wiped away her own. "You know it was Ric?" Elizabeth inquired.
"I saw him and some of his men leaving, when I came in," Jason replied.
"Where did you get this?" she inquired about the gash.
"There was a bomb on my bike," Jason replied.
Elizabeth's anger rose, "He blew up your bike?!"
"I barely saw it before the explosion," Jason replied, "A piece of shrapnel ricocheted and… hit me."
Elizabeth took his hand and sat him on the couch. "We need to get you to a safe house," Jason insisted as she went for the first aid kit. Usually Elizabeth would have smiled at his concern, but the news of their mutual mentor's death sent a million thoughts racing through her head. There was so much they were going to have to do. First on the list, was taking out the moron that dared to go up against their organization. Elizabeth almost had her hand on the kit when her door bell rang. She went back to Jason. They went to the door.
"Elizabeth, it's Ric!" the annoying voice of Sonny's smarmy half-brother came from behind the door.
"Just a minute," Elizabeth replied. With a look Jason knew she wanted him behind the door, so he stood there with gun drawn as she opened it.
"Elizabeth," Ric soothed, "Thank goodness you're all right."
"Of course I'm fine," Elizabeth played unaware, "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Sonny's dead," Ric cracked his voice.
Elizabeth began to cry, "He can't be…"
"Jason flipped out," Ric lied, "He killed Sonny."
"That's not possible," Elizabeth said, "Jason adored Sonny. He was loyal to him!"
"I know this is a lot to handle," Ric tried to calm her, "And I can see you're upset." Elizabeth took in a breath. "I don't think it's safe for you to be alone tonight," Ric continued, "Come and let me protect you."
"I think I'd like to be alone," Elizabeth answered.
"All right, whatever you need," Ric replied, "I'll put some of my guys on you for tonight; we'll talk in the morning." Elizabeth closed the door quickly.
Jason was fuming. Ric had always been jealous of Jason. Now he was moving to take what was Jason's. First he took out Sonny: he most certainly was worming his way in to take over the organization and Elizabeth with it. "Not my Elizabeth," Jason thought. The bastard had to be stopped. Jason met Elizabeth's eyes. "I-I didn't…" Jason began.
"I know," Elizabeth replied. Jason took her in his arms. She rested her head on his chest. Did Ric think she was that stupid? Elizabeth was not the 15 year-old runaway that Sonny had taken in four years ago. He had groomed her as his heir. He knew that with Jason by her side there was nothing they couldn't do. "Come," Elizabeth commanded. She led him back to the couch.
Elizabeth opened the kit and began to work on Jason's wound. "Ric is going to start taking out our loyal men," Jason grimaced momentarily. "What are we going to do?" Jason differed to her.
"Call Max and the others," Elizabeth answered him, "We're going to do to Ric what he did to Sonny." Jason nodded.
~~~~~~
Ric was humming to himself upon his return to his home, in the dead of night. He flicked on the lamp to find Elizabeth humorless, sitting in his armchair.
"Well this is a pleasant surprise," Ric smiled, "Did you change your mind?" Elizabeth looked at him, "How could you Ric?"
"Elizabeth," Ric began to sweat.
Jason stepped out from behind him and Ric turned. He jumped seeing the gun in Jason's hand. "You killed your own brother," Elizabeth said.
"Who told you that?" Ric asked, "Him?" He motioned to Jason. Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "You can't possibly believe him." She cocked her head. "Put that away, you thug," Ric ordered. Jason glared at him.
"He only takes orders from me now," Elizabeth replied.
"She says the word; you're dead," Jason told him.
"Elizabeth?" Ric pleaded.
"Shut up!" Jason warned. Ric tried to make a break for the door.
"Leaving so soon?" Elizabeth backed him up to Jason.
"Are you really going to shoot me?" Ric asked.
"I'm just here because I want to watch," Elizabeth replied. She locked eyes with Jason. Jason seized Ric and put the gun to his temple. Ric's terrified expression was not lost on Elizabeth, but they couldn't let him live after this attempted coup. Elizabeth nodded. Jason pulled the trigger. Ric was dead instantly. Jason dropped him and put another bullet between his eyes before he called in Max and Milo. They nodded to Elizabeth and retrieved Ric's body. Jason escorted Elizabeth to a waiting limo and whisked her away to establish alibis, just in case. Elizabeth breathed a sigh of relief in Jason's arms as they rode. Jason held onto her tightly and kissed the top of her head. She was safe now.
The End
